The DSM-5 lists personality disorders in the same way as other mental disorders, rather than on a separate 'axis', as previously. The most recent fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders stresses that a personality disorder is an enduring and inflexible pattern of long duration leading to significant distress or impairment and is not due to use of substances or another medical condition. Dissociative identity disorder, previously known as multiple personality as well as multiple personality disorder, has always been classified as a dissociative disorder and never was regarded as a personality disorder. There are accepted diagnostic issues and controversies with regard to distinguishing particular personality disorder categories from each other. The ICD-10 classified the DSM-5 schizotypal personality disorder as a form of schizophrenia rather than as a personality disorder. For example, the ICD-10 included narcissistic personality disorder in the group of other specific personality disorders, while DSM-5 does not include enduring personality change after catastrophic experience. Both have deliberately aligned their diagnoses to some extent, but some differences remain. The DSM defines psychiatric diagnoses based on research and expert consensus. The ICD is a collection of alpha-numerical codes which have been assigned to all known clinical states, and provides uniform terminology for medical records, billing, statistics and research. the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fifth Edition, DSM-5) by the American Psychiatric Association.the International Classification of Diseases (11th revision, ICD-11) published by the World Health Organization. The two latest editions of the major systems of classification are: They argue that the theory and diagnosis of personality disorders are based strictly on social, or even sociopolitical and economic considerations. Despite various methodological schemas designed to categorize personality disorders, many issues occur with classifying a personality disorder because the theory and diagnosis of such disorders occur within prevailing cultural expectations thus, their validity is contested by some experts on the basis of inevitable subjectivity. Personality disorders are associated with considerable stigma in popular and clinical discourse alike. A variety of psychoanalytic approaches are also used. Evidence-based psychotherapies for personality disorders include cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy especially for borderline personality disorder. Treatment for personality disorders is primarily psychotherapeutic. The behavior patterns of personality disorders are typically recognized by adolescence, the beginning of adulthood or sometimes even childhood and often have a pervasive negative impact on the quality of life. For psychiatric patients, the prevalence of personality disorders is estimated between 40 and 60%. Those diagnosed with a personality disorder may experience difficulties in cognition, emotiveness, interpersonal functioning, or impulse control. Hence, personality disorders are defined by experiences and behaviors that deviate from social norms and expectations. Personality, defined psychologically, is the set of enduring behavioral and mental traits that distinguish individual humans. Official criteria for diagnosing personality disorders are listed in the sixth chapter of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The definitions vary by source and remain a matter of controversy. These patterns develop early, are inflexible, and are associated with significant distress or disability. Personality disorders ( PD) are a class of mental disorders characterized by enduring maladaptive patterns of behavior, cognition, and inner experience, exhibited across many contexts and deviating from those accepted by the individual's culture. Extraordinary images created using ochre and charcoal, they feature bison, aurochs (ancestral wild cattle), mammoths and a single big fish. There are, of course, many stalactites and stalagmites to admire as well, but the real reason to go to Pech Merle is to view some 800 cave paintings. The cave is a great place to observe large disc-shaped speleothems called shields, as well as cave pearls. We began our exploration by driving through the stunning Célé River Valley to a cave called Pech Merle. We stayed in the quiet village of Espédaillac, in the heart of the Causses. Neolithic tombs, known as dolmens, can be found throughout the Causses, speaking to how long humans have inhabited the region. I didn’t see any beautiful reef complexes or exquisite troves of fossils, but it was a delight all the same and very much worth visiting, as it hosts a stunning series of rural landscapes, caves and historical sites. The plateau’s limestone layers are Middle and Late Jurassic in age and dip ever so slightly to the west. Last summer, I traveled to a limestone plateau region in the smaller of the two basins, the Aquitaine, which is about half the size of the Paris Basin. This quartet is flanked by two mountain belts: the Pyrenees that run across the country’s southern border with Spain, and the Alps, poking into France’s eastern margin, on the border with Italy and Switzerland. The geological map of France is divided into six main zones: two broad domes of metamorphic “basement” rocks that bulge up - the Armorican Massif and the Massif Central - and two broad downwarped regions, the Paris Basin and the Aquitaine Basin. Hundreds of caves underlie the region, and dozens are emblazoned with the art of ancient humans. The easiest way to get to the Causses du Quercy is to fly to Toulouse and then drive north. The Cro-Magnons, their descendants, and their neighbors, the Neanderthals, all occupied caves in this region, and they left their bones, tools and art behind as a record for us to ponder. The term “Cro-Magnon” has come to be applied to these oldest Homo sapiens sapiens, named for a site here in the Causses. The caves that resulted are fascinating in their own right, but also because they served as shelters for some of the oldest members of our species. The region wasn’t named a geopark because of its limestones, which are unremarkable, but because it’s been transformed into a karstic wonderland by the slow dissolution of those limestones by groundwater. And in 2017, the Causses region was named a UNESCO Geopark. It’s been designated a UNESCO World Heritage “ agro-pastoral cultural landscape” since 2011. The vibe of pastoral France is exuded by the Causses. The dolmen speaks profoundly of how humans have inhabited the Causses for a very long time. Strolling along the tree-lined roads, you hear the buzz of insects and glimpse backyard vegetable gardens, and after a tiny car passes you with a wave, you discover a Neolithic tomb, or dolmen, surrounded by vines. It’s a place where the roads curve and wiggle, the butterflies dance in the sun, and people take long lunches at outdoor patios adjacent to the local “auberge” (inn). The Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, usually just called “the Causses” (pronounced like “coast” without the “t”), in south-central France is a classic Gallic landscape of gently rolling hills divided millennia ago into farm plots, livestock grazing pastures, low, dense forests and small stone-carved towns. The village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie is built on a hill above the Lot River Valley. Moreover, this feature is prone to crashes that it is basically useless. This is how you’re going to build and structure your routine. Inside I include an expectations page where you write down what you expect your kids to do and how you expect them to act–that way it’s crystal clear. The Ultimate Parent’s Guide to Getting Organized: This free download includes 11 pages of guides, examples, tools, and more. Now that you have your plan written down, and you’ve decided to commit to it for a month or two, it’s time to start implementing! This part can seem the most intimidating, but good news–I have some great tools and ideas for you. Now I know summer is only a few months, but think of it this way…you are creating routines for the school year too by sticking to a schedule! Use tools to help your kids with new routines and schedules. That way it can become a habit for you and everyone else in your family. But wait for a while to veer too far off of what you originally planned. You said you were going to go workout before it got hot, stick to that.ĭuring the first month or so, if something’s not working, tweak it. And by rigid, I mean, you said wake up at 8:00, then wake up at 8:00. For it to stick, you need to be somewhat rigid about it. I know a month or two sounds intense, but it’s important. Follow this schedule for a month or two and tweak. And we stick to that theme because it is so general. Then fill in the schedule with a loose idea of activities or things you want and need to do. Start with the non-negotiables, and then fill in everything else like outside time, errands, or chores. So write it all down on a piece of paper–it doesn’t have to be pretty, it just has to be written down. Pen and paper work better for this than a computer. Write down your schedule and routine by starting with the non-negotiables. These non-negotiables will be the outline of your day! Add in other things that you want or need to do around the non-negotiables. We do these things every day at the same time for consistency and sanity. I put those in first, and that’s how I start creating my schedule. If you’re doing summer school, that’s included too. This includes wake-up time, lunchtime, and bedtime. As we talk about how to do this and you start implementing it in your life, remember this why! Start your schedule planning with the non-negotiables. Giving them that structure is going to help them so much! And as a bonus, when they know what comes next, they have activities to look forward to. The reality is that kids cooperate much more when they know what’s coming next (like in school) because knowing what comes next makes you feel at ease. That’s why you might hear your kids’ teachers say they’re great in class, and you’re wondering why they’re so much more challenging at home. Kids know this is how the day is supposed to go. Creating schedules and routines for your family isn’t all about sanity–there’s actual research on why it’s important! Routines eliminate power struggles between parents and kids. Let’s start why WHY we need routines during the summer. Why Do We Need Daily Schedules and Routines? |
